Our History

Tifton is known as the Friendly City and the heartbeat hub of South Central Georgia. It was founded in 1872 by Captain Henry Harding Tift, a steamship engineer from Connecticut, who arrived in Georgia to harvest timber for the family shipbuilding business.

With easy travel access from 1-75, U.S. 319 and U.S. 82, Tifton is an agricultural center, an $80 million agri-farming region of the richest land in the South, producing row crops, turf, and vegetables. Tifton has a great background in education, defending the title of the Reading Capital of the World, plus two colleges and a technical college. Tifton is a regional medical hub, with Tift Regional Medical Center staffed by 125+ doctors.

Tifton provides a great location for business meetings and conventions at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center, which has seating for 2,500 for concerts and fifteen meeting rooms with free parking and a full event-planning staff. Tifton has many unique museums: the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Living History Farm and Village, the National Peanut Museum, the Tifton Terminal Railroad Museum, The Museum of Arts and Heritage, the Atlantic Coastline Artists Guild, and the Plant Telecommunications Telephone Museum.

Tifton has wonderful sporting facilities, including a sanctioned aquatic center, an updated football stadium as a professional practice field, eight football and soccer fields, eight softball and baseball fields, fifteen tennis courts, a bowling alley, and two public championship golf courses and private golf courses. Public fishing areas, numerous parks and gardens, and a variety of “u-pick” farms provide plenty of outdoor family enjoyment. Visit tifton.net or tiftontourism.com for more info.
